The Reg Fox Singles Cup - 2011

TREVOR SAMWAYS WINS THE REG FOX CUP.

Trevor Samways won the Reg Fox Singles Trophy beating Alex Giddens in a nail biting contest on The Constable Course this morning.

The game went "to the wire" with Trevor taking the trophy on the 18th with the very last putt to win 1 UP. Alex, as usual had to give shots, in this case six to Trevor who used them cleverly winning five holes and halving one. That was the difference for both drove the ball extremely well off the tee and only occasionally did they miss the greens with their second shots. Alex, particularly, was raking the fairways with some long drives leaving himself only medium or short iron shots to the greens. Trevor on his new handicap of 12 went round in 83 gross whilst Alex played exactly to his handicap with a gross 78.

But what a start! Trevor remarked to the Referees, Tony Osborne and David Ferdinand that he intended to play with a used ball, the one that he had used in his two previous rounds and that had served him well. Guess what happened next, 1st Constable and yes "Clever Trevor" thins it into the water. By the third Trevor had put matters right using his shot to level and proceeded to play superb golf dropping only one further shot on the front nine to be 2UP.

Alex decides now is the time for the drive of the round and at the 10th being the Left Handers dream hole puts a massive fade drive to within 110 yards of the hole with no more than a Three Wood. 9 iron to the green, two putts and back to 1 DOWN.

Mostly pars by both until the 15th when Alex made one of his few mistakes by leaving his chip short of the green. Door open, in steps Trevor with his shot and back to 2UP. 16th won by Alex's par to Trevor's bogey, half on the 17th and so on to the 18th tee, Alex staring down the barrel needing a win to halve the match and giving Trevor a shot.

Most men would have put up a white flag by then. Not Alex instead he 3 Woods a glorious shot to within 20 foot of the pin. Trevor pin high on the right of the green with his drive has a difficult chip on thin bare ground but chips well only to see the ball roll off the green and back down the hill. Advantage Alex but wait, Trevor recovers with a beautiful chip almost dead on the pin and Alex has a long putt for the win to take the game on to the 19th. Alex rolls a gentle putt down the slope bang on line only to see it stop inches from the hole. Trevor taps in and match over.

Great Match Play game played in true sporting spirit by both players and a credit to The Vets.

Well done both.
