Inter Club Match v Rusmere Home July 2010

After the heavy loss at Benton Hall on Monday, seven of the Stoke team were looking forward to a better day at home to Rushmere on Wednesday.

However, what followed was one of the worst days in the history of Stoke Vet’s interclub matches.

At the introduction, several of the Rushmere players said  that they had never played on the Championship Gainsborough course before and were not expecting to do well.

It all seemed to indicate an easy win for the Stoke side.

Whether it was due to being too relaxed or the Rushmere handicaps, things went dramatically wrong.

The Captain and Bob Filer led the way by losing the first match.

This was followed by defeats from Martin Brown / Alan Burrows, Roger Davies / Bob Wheatley, Roy Sims / John Escott, David Austin  / George Falconer, Peter Deasy / Ray Pickering and David Hunter / Ted Wood.

The only Crumb of comfort was a half from Trevor Samways / John King, with Trevor also winning the nearest the pin prize on the 7th.

The final result of ½ - 7 ½  must be the  heaviest defeat experienced at home and does not auger well for the return match at Rushmere in September.
